Dear Editor:
The Covington County PALS (People Against A Littered State), along with the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce Environmental Committee, would like to say “thank you” to the Straughn High School baseball team and “Diamond Dolls.”
These youth and some of their parents gave many hours on Sat., Feb. 7, to clean up 19 miles of the roadsides near their school. We commend Coach John Fussell and every person who helped in this clean up.
For the third straight year, these hard-working students and their parents filled a dump truck full of trash. These students learned a life-long lesson from picking up this litter. We feel sure they will influence their peers and their families not to throw out litter on the roadsides.
We would like to challenge other school groups and community organizations to clean up their area of the county. Let’s keep Covington County beautiful! And, remind those who litter: May it never be said to your shame, “This was a place of beauty before you came.”
Jan White, Covington County PALS chairperson
