Rain is expected to blanket Covington County through most of the rest of the week, with a remote possibility of severe thunderstorms or tornadoes.

Jeremie Shaffer, assistant director of the Covington County emergency management authority, said the area could see around 4 inches of rain the rest of the week, with some areas possibly receiving up to 8 inches.

“This does cause some concern for possible low-lying areas being flooded, as well as river flooding,” she said. “The rain should begin (Wednesday) over southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama, with a threat of isolated supercells. This front will move to the southeast and stall, causing even more rainfall.

“We could see a threat of isolated severe thunderstorms (Thursday) and Saturday.”

Shaffer said it is not likely for the county to see any major severe weather systems like tornadoes, but encouraged all citizens to pay attention to any warnings.

“It’s the same thing that it always is with a system like this,” she said. “If we do happen to get put under a warning or watch, then be sure to pay attention to any warnings and stay tuned to your television or radio for the most up-to-date information.”

The National Weather Service in Mobile reports the following forecast for the remainder of the week: today — showers and thunderstorms, high around 68, with an 80 percent chance of rain; tonight — showers and thunderstorms, low around 59, with an 80 percent chance of rain; Friday — showers and thunderstorms likely, high around 77, with a 70 percent chance of rain and possibility of wind gusts as high as 25 mph; Friday night — showers and thunderstorms likely, low around 62, with a 60 percent chance of rain; Saturday — showers and thunderstorms likely, high around 74, with a 60 percent chance of rain both during the day and at night.
