Homespun Country Hoedown organizers weren’t going to let a few thunderstorms “rain” on their good time, but the possibility of tornadoes was a different story.

At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dwight Mikel, director of the City of Andalusia’s Department of Leisure Services, canceled the 14th annual Homespun Country Hoedown due to inclement weather.

“We hate it,” said Debbie Carter of the Andalusia Adult Activity Center. “But with what they are now predicting that the weather is going to be like, (Mikel) felt he had no other choice.

“We just want everyone to be safe,” she said. “We had every intention of having ourselves a great time. The Kiwanis building is decorated and ready to go, but they told us they didn’t think it was safe to have all those people in that big metal building with us under a tornado watch.”

A new date will be announced in the future.
