Berries thrive despite cold snap

The strawberry crop at Florala’s Edmondson Farms is ripe and almost ready for the picking despite freezing temperatures earlier this week.

Glenene Edmondson, one of the many in the Edmondson family who tends to the farm, said while the strawberries aren’t quite ready to be picked off the vine, the stand has plenty already picked and ready to be sold.

“The frost didn’t do too much damage to the crop, thank goodness,” Edmondson said. “We were able to pick about 20 flats before the weather came in and they are ready to be sold. I think the ones that are left on the vines will be ready next week, so be on the look out for the ‘u-pick’ sign.”

Edmonson Farms is located on Racetrack Road.

“Just watch for the signs on (St. Hwy.) 55,” Edmondson said.
