Property tax sale set for next week

There are approximately 80 parcels of property set for auction at next week’s delinquent tax sale, county revenue commissioner Janice Hart said Wednesday.

The sale, which will be held at 10 a.m. Wed., May 20, should help bring in the remaining $39,600 of the more than $11.2 million in property taxes billed last October.

“That total is from 83 parcels,” Hart said. “That’s of Tuesday, but we have had several people call and say they plan to pay before the sale day.”

Collections for 2008 started slow, but to date, nearly 99 percent of the total billed has been collected. Those who have not remitted their annual property taxes stand a chance of losing their property during the annual delinquent tax sale, which is traditionally held on the “courthouse steps.”

“It gets pretty warm outside these days, so we’re going to have the sale in the hall here in front of the office inside the courthouse,” she said. “We want people to be comfortable.”

Information on the properties set for sale are available daily and include the property owner’s name, parcel ID number and description, as well as the price where bidding will open, Hart said.

On the day of the sale, parcels will be sold in alphabetical order by owner’s name.

In years past, the bulk of the properties were sold, she said.

“With the exception of I think two or so, everything sold,” Hart said. “In those two cases, since no one bid on them, the probate office purchased them and they were categorized as state property.”
