An Andalusia man is dead and another critically injured after a two-vehicle accident right outside of Opp on Friday morning.
The accident occurred at 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 85 and State Hwy. 299, about a quarter of a mile from Opp.
An Alabama State Troopers spokesman identified the fatality as 66-year-old William “Jerry” Barnes.
Reports show Barnes was traveling south on County Road 85 in a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra when the accident occurred. The other vehicle involved, a 2000 Ford F-150, was driven by Christopher M. Watson, 35, of Andalusia.
“The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Barnes’ vehicle failed to yield the right of way to the Watson vehicle that was traveling east on Alabama Highway 299,” the spokesman said. “Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Watson was transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. As of press time, Watson was listed in critical condition.
Agencies assisting the troopers were the Covington County Sheriff’s Office and the Opp Police Department, the spokesman said.
No other information surrounding the accident was available.
