A quick trip down U.S. Hwy. 331 turned into a quick stay at the Covington County Jail for a Limestone County couple after sheriff’s deputies discovered drugs and more than $6,000 in cash inside the couple’s vehicle during a traffic stop Thursday.

Chief Deputy David Anderson of the Covington County Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle was stopped by deputies working as part of an overtime traffic blitz sponsored by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs grant.

“Deputy Kirk Dusek stopped the vehicle for running in excess of 100 miles per hour,” Anderson said. “During the stop, the deputy noticed that the driver had a bulge in his front pocket and was questioned about weapons on his person. The driver stated he had a pocketknife in his right front pocket.

“When the deputy removed the knife for officer safety, he also removed a money clip full of $20 bills,” he said. “From (the driver’s) left pocket, the deputy also removed an unlabeled bottle of Lortab 7.5 pills.”

A search of the vehicle uncovered more cash and drugs, Anderson said.

“(Deputies found) a bottle of pills believed to be Xanax and Lortabs,” he said. “They also recovered another money clip of $100 bills. In the back seat floorboard was a bowl of loose marijuana, rolling papers, a marijuana grinder and two marijuana joints.”

All-in-all, deputies recovered and seized $6,110 in cash from the vehicle.

Those arrested were the driver, Lance Campbell, 30, and Charlene Appleton, 35, both from Elkmont, Ala. Each was charged with possession of a controlled substance, first-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and booked into the Covington County Jail under a $23,000 bond.

Anderson said both Campbell and Appleton have prior drug charges.

Assisting in the arrest were agents with the Drug Task Force.

Deputies will be continuing patrolling through tonight under the ADECA overtime grant.
