Two homes in Florala were struck by lightning Tuesday night.
Assistant Police Chief Chris Jackson said emergency personnel were dispatched at 8:35 p.m. to a home on Hicks Road and a short time later at 9:02 p.m. to a home on Fourth Avenue.
“The initial call reported fires in both the homes,” Jackson said. “When personnel arrived, smoke had filled both the homes after lightning hit.
“Luckily, no one was hurt and the only casualty was an icemaker in the Fourth Avenue home,” he said.
Jackson said it appeared that lightning came into the house through a copper water line running into the back of the home’s refrigerator.
“That’s why it’s so important to ground copper water lines,” he said.
