Eight pieces of property inside the city limits will get a pricey clean-up if owners don’t respond within 15 days to a certified letter they are about to receive from the City of Andalusia.

The council declared the condemned the properties under the city’s weed ordinance Tuesday night. The property owners previously have been contacted by the city asking them to deal with weed problems. The owners have not responded.

Director of Planning Andy Wiggins, who brought the request to the council, said the owners will now receive a certified letter. If they do not take action within 15 days, the city will have the lots cleaned and the costs of the abatement and cleaning will be added to the property owner’s tax bill. City ordinance 1994-7 sets out the guidelines of the process.

306 N. Cotton

Council member Hazel Griffin made the motion, which was seconded by Councilman Kennith Mount.

In unrelated business, the council:

Agreed to renew its liability insurance with Alabama Municipal Insurance Corp. (AMIC). The $183,425 premium was about $16,000 less than last year and is guaranteed for three years. Lester O’Neal of the O’Neal Agency presented the proposal from AMIC, as well as a separate one from Travelers.
