Wednesday will begin the Covington County Forestry Planning Committee’s annual three-day tree sale.

Chuck Simon, Covington County Extension coordinator, said it is one of the most widely attended events held at the U.S. Department of Agriculture building each year.

“Which means you should come early for the biggest selection,” Simon said. “There are more than 20 different varieties of trees available, and at only $1 each, a huge opportunity.”

Species available are green ash, bald cypress, river birch, buttonbush, chinquapin, cottonwood, southern crabapple, crepe myrtle, flowering dogwood, fringetree (Grancy greybeard), Florida maple, red maple, blackjack oak, laurel oak, sawtooth oak, shumard oak, white oak, common persimmon, Chickasaw plum, yellow poplar, redbud, sycamore and black willow.

“These are all what we call ‘wildlife-type’ trees,” Simon said. “These are trees that you’d find in our native landscape that can be planted in one’s yard to enhance the property and attract wildlife.”

Simon said the only “horticultural-type” tree is the crepe myrtle.

The sale will be held Feb. 3-5 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the east side entrance of the U.S.D.A. building.

“This year we’re going to have a bit more order to the sale, so it should get people in and out in a timely fashion,” he said speaking on last year’s large turnout at the event.
