Andalusia Police have located the vehicle used in Monday’s “snatch and grab” burglary at Sander’s Fine Jewelry, parked in the same spot from which it was stolen from, Chief Wilbur Williams said Wednesday.
Williams confirmed the white Chevrolet short-wheel based, regular cab pick-up truck was found inside a fleet yard of a west Bypass business late Tuesday afternoon.
“Obviously, the person responsible for this crime had no transportation and needed to find some,” Williams said. “This is truly an opportunity thing and things fell into place for this man. Luckily, we were able to find the vehicle, which puts us one step closer to finding the person responsible.
“He couldn’t have done it without a vehicle, so he found one,” he said.
Video surveillance tapes of the incident show that on Monday, at approximately 10:26 p.m., a “light skinned male” backed up to Sander’s, got out of the vehicle and used a metal pipe to shatter a plate glass window. He then reached into the store and removed a display case containing an estimated $18,000 worth of gold jewelry – all without ever having stepped inside the building.
As of Wednesday afternoon, police were working to pull still images from the surveillance tapes to help identify the man responsible, Williams said.
Anyone with any information concerning the robbery or the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Andalusia Police Department at 334-222-1155.
