Time for seniors to get busy applying for scholarships

For seniors across the county, the countdown to graduation has begun, and here Andalusia High School student guidance counselor Jenny Pitts shares upcoming coming events that should be on every senior’s calendar:
LBW Community College’s scholarship deadline is March 1. Applications may be picked up in the guidance office. Seniors are reminded that two letters of recommendation, a copy of the confirmation page verifying completion of the Federal Application for Financial Student Aid and an official high school transcript must accompany the application.
LBWCC ensemble auditions will be March 29 and 30. Vocalists’ auditions are set for March 29, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., and instrumentalists on March 30 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. All auditions will be held in the Dixon Theatre.
Enterprise-Ozark Community College offers aviation scholarships. The deadline is March 1, and applications are available in the guidance office.
The Alabama Conservation District Employees Association Scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors. The deadline is March 5. Contact the guidance office for an application.
Classes of 1948 and 1961 Foundation scholarships are also available in the guidance office. The deadline to submit applications is March 12, 2010.
The deadline to register for the April ACT test is March 5. Registration packets are available in the guidance office or one can register online at act.org. AHS’s school code is 010-080.
Students are encouraged to visit fastweb.com and schoolsoup.com. These are independent search engines for scholarships.
The Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund was established by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar in 1992 to provide scholarships for college and technical school to children who have had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job accident. Contact the guidance office for additional information.
District IX school office personnel scholarship is available to high school seniors. Contact the guidance office for an application. Deadline is March 15, 2010.
Post # 80 American Legion academic scholarship program was established to help students who need financial assistance. Priority will be given to children or grandchildren of veterans. Applications are available in the guidance office. Deadline is April 1.
