A minor traffic infraction turned out to be a major felony incident for six Illinois spring breakers after they were caught with 10 cases of beer and eight cases of assorted liquors Sunday.

Lt. Lance Price said agents with the Alabama Beverage Control Board were called to assist the Florala Police Department when the officer located the alcohol inside the group’s vehicle.

“What many people don’t know is that it is illegal to possess and transport alcoholic beverages through a state they have not purchased it from,” Price said. “It is also illegal to possess five gallons or more of such alcohol.”

Price said 52, 12-ounce beers constitutes five gallons of alcohol.

Arrested and charged with transporting more than five gallons of alcohol were: Jona Bertsche, 22; Troy Bertsche, 23; Josh Decker, 22; Tim Iverson, 23; Kyle Harding, 24; and Erick Smith, 23. Each were booked into the Covington County Jail and held on a $10,000 bond.

Price said he expects these arrests to be the first of many in the coming days as spring breakers make their way through Alabama.
