Time is running out for area residents to decide if they want to be “in it to win it” as part of this year’s Covington County Relay for Life event.
Ressie Gray, Relay for Life chair, said only 31 days remain before the May 7 event. To date, 328 participants – or 38 teams – have signed up to participate and only about a third of the $117,000 fundraising goal has been met.
“We would love to have more teams join the cause, and they still have a month to raise money,” Gray said. “So far, the county has raised $35,512. We’re getting there and there are some events that aren’t included in that total, but we’ve got a little piece to go.”
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fund-raising activity. During the Relay, team members take turns walking around a track.
For those who are thinking of joining in the local fun, the group’s last organizational meeting will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at the Covington County Board of Education building. Committee members are asked to meet at 5:30 p.m.
Last year, the event raised $107,000.
This year, the game show themed event will kick-off Fri., May 7, at 6 p.m. at the Covington County Fairgrounds and will end with closing ceremonies at 2 a.m.
Gray said there is special entertainment on tap for the night.
“The gospel group Southland that is singing this week at the Covington Electric Cooperative annual meeting will be our opening entertainment at Relay for Life,” she said.
