Post Office won’t extend hours for taxes

Last-minute filers facing tomorrow’s tax deadline and planning to file paper returns may have a little less time than they think.

The U.S. Postal Service will not extend its hours locally. The Andalusia Post Office will close at noon, its usual Thursday closing time, and the River Falls Post Office will close at 4 p.m.

And at least one local tax preparer said more people are filing late this year.

“This year there have been more people filing late,” Vicki Watson, a tax preparer for Donaldson Tax and Accounting Service said. “But, we’re not booked completely. We are taking walk-ins and appointments.”

The Internal Revenue Service reminds late-filers to take time to review their tax returns for common errors that could result in processing delays.

“Last-minute filers typically make more errors,” IRS Spokesman Dan Boone said. “Using tax software, including IRS Free File, will eliminate most errors.”

Boone suggested those rushing to meet the April 15 deadline should file electronically.

For those who choose to e-file, the tax software will do the calculations and flag common errors and give prompts for missing information, he said.

Boone said to remember the Making Work Pay tax credit, which is available in 2009 and 2010 and worth up to $400 for individuals and $800 for married couples, and most people got this as a reduction to their paycheck withholding.

For this and other tax credits visit irs.gov to see if you qualify or have an accountant prepare for you.

Boone said for those completing a paper form, it’s important to double-check all figures. All filers should make sure they enter their Social Security number correctly because it tends to be one of the most common errors.

Another common error is that people incorrectly enter the bank’s routing number and account number for direct deposit. Incorrect numbers can cause refunds to be delayed or deposited into the wrong account.

Don’t forget to sign and date the return. Those filing joint returns must both sign and date the return. E-files can sign using a self-selected personal identification number.

Paper filers need to attach W-2s and other forms that reflect tax withholding, as well as other necessary forms and schedules, to the front of the returns.
