MOBILE (AP) — A Baldwin County grand jury has indicted Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine on a murder charge following the shooting death of his former girlfriend, Angel Downs.

An attorney accompanied the 46-year-old as he appeared at the Baldwin County Corrections Center around 7:15 p.m Monday. Nodine’s bail was set at $500,000. His attorney, John Williams, says his client is innocent.

Baldwin County authorities have named Nodine as the only suspect in Downs’ shooting death May 9 in Gulf Shores.

A grand jury also recently impeached him on several charges including fraudulently purchasing more than 2,400 Lortab painkillers from nine pharmacies in four states and abusing Downs.

His impeachment trial is scheduled for June 8.
