District tourney starts Friday

Five local teams will compete for a spot at the state tournament this weekend at the Cal Ripken District Tournament at the Andalusia Sports Complex.

The five teams are split up among three different age groups with one team in the 8-and-under age group; two teams in the 9-and-10-year-old age group; and two teams in the 11-and-12-year-old age group.

8-and-under

South Alabama, in the 8-and-under age group, will play Newton Friday night at 5:30; Saturday morning and night at 10:30 and 5:30, respectively. All games will be on Field No. 2.

9-and-10-year-old

In the 9-and-10-year-old age group, South Alabama will play Covington County at 7:30 Friday evening on Field No. 2, and 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, respectively. The 10 a.m. Saturday game is on Field No. 1, and the 7:30 p.m. game is on Field No. 2.

11-and-12-year-old

For the 11-and-12-year-old age group, Covington County, Newton and South Alabama will play in double elimination format.

Covington County will play Newton at 7 p.m. Friday evening. The South Alabama team has a bye, and it will play the winner of the Newton-Covington County game at 5 p.m., Saturday evening.

The loser of the first game and the second game will play at 7:30 p.m. on Field No. 3 in the elimination game.

The championship game is at 5 p.m. Sunday evening.
