The 8-and-under South Alabama All-Stars baseball team defeated Newton this weekend to win the Cal Ripken district tournament at the Andalusia Sports Complex.

South Alabama won 19-1 Friday night, and 19-9 in the championship game.

It was a tight game in the first inning of play as both teams scored three runs, but South Alabama pulled away scoring five runs in the second inning in the win.

In the second inning, South Alabama scored its runs on five singles and two doubles.

Tariq Walker, Corey Copeland, Gabe Norris, Blaine Stinson and Shane Nixon hit one single each; and Jacob Cravey and Chase Harper hit one double each.

South Alabama added nine runs in the third inning to take an outright 17-3 lead.

In the third inning, South Alabama’s Walker, Copeland, Norris, Cravey, Harper, Stinson, Seth Dooley, Nixon and Whitaker scored on eight singles and one double.

In the top of the fourth inning, South Alabama sealed the victory scoring one run to force the 10-run mercy rule.

In the fourth, Stinson scored on a single from Noah Gooden.

Newton scored its last six runs in the fourth inning on seven hits.

South Alabama took control of the game in the third inning scoring eight runs to take an outright 9-1 lead.

Newton managed to score one run in the first inning on a double from Hunter Norwalk to score Christian Enfinger.

South Alabama’s eight runs in the third inning came on singles from Walker, Copeland, Caleb Blackston (2), Cravey and Michael Jordan.

Later in the fourth inning, South Alabama sealed the win by scoring 10 runs on nine hits.

Walker led in scoring with three runs; and Copeland, Blackston, Cravey, Stinson, Dooley, Norris and Brendon Douglas scored two runs each for South Alabama.
