Andalusia resident Ralph Mathews won the 13th State Senior Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Brewton this weekend.

Mathews shot a final round 72, two shots ahead of Scott Johnston of Auburn.

“I did not drive the ball so well in the final round, and Scott pushed me very hard. It was fun to feel the pressure of trying to win,” Mathews said in an Alabama Golf Association press release. “I’d set myself a target of 8-under-par, but didn’t get there.”

He finished with a three-round 72-67-72. Johnston recorded a 72-71-70 (213).

Mathews, 51, now has three different state titles as he also won the 1974 State Junior Championship, and he won last year’s State Senior Four Ball with David Hancock of Greenville.
