From July 5-8, 2010, a group of 17 boys and adult leaders from Boy Scout Troop 46 in Andalusia hiked a portion of the Teton Crest Trail in Grand Teton National Park, Jackson, Wy.

The group arrived in Jackson on July 3rd. On that Sun., July 4, the group attended worship services at St. John’s, volunteered to help the church with its July 4th carnival for the children and adults of the town of Jackson, watched Jackson’s annual parade, went whitewater rafting on the Snake River and viewed a fireworks display over the mountains.

That night, the group camped at Jenny Lake. The next day, they ferried across Jenny Lake to begin their hike.

The group spent four days in the backcountry of Grand Teton National Park, hiking through Cascade Canyon, the South Fork of Cascade Canyon through snow up to Hurricane Pass and then through the North Fork of Cascade Canyon, again through snow, to Lake Solitude, which was frozen.

“To say that the scenery was indescribable is an understatement, and the trip went off without any problems,” said Tom Albritton, one of the adults on the trip. “It really was a perfect trip. Our original route was a little bit different from what we ended up hiking because two weeks out from our trip the Park Service told us that the first part of our hike was buried in 10 feet of snow, and they said we’d be hiking in other parts with snow up to our waists.

“They also said that we’d be camping in snow in most parts,” he said. “Obviously we had to regroup somewhat, and what we ended up with could not have worked out any better than it did. We had plenty of snow on the ground; no one got hurt, and everyone still had smiles on their faces on the last day.”
