Despite getting knocked out of the 2010 Babe Ruth 15U state tournament at Wright Park in Satsuma Tuesday morning, Covington County head coach Preston Weaver said the boys “played well together.”

“We had some bad calls, and the boys stayed together and played well together,” Weaver said. “We just weren’t able to get anything going. Everything we hit was right to somebody, or either we popped the ball up. It wasn’t because of a bunch of strikeouts.”

The Covington County team lost to Bay Minette 10-7 Tuesday morning.

In earlier tournament action, Covington County lost to Tallassee 8-0 on Saturday; lost 16-8 to Grand Bay on Sunday; and lost 12-8 to Childersburgh on Monday.

Leading up to the tournament in Satsuma, Covington County enjoyed a good run, winning the district tournament in Opp earlier this month.

In addition, Weavers regular season team — the Phillies — won the county championship to close the regular season.

“(The teams) played pretty good defensively (at the state tournament),” Weaver said. “We struggled in pitching, and we struggled real bad in our batting.

“Our batting wasn’t any good at all,” he said. “We struggled the whole time. They have some pretty good teams down there. We just didn’t hit the baseball.”
