Out of the six local high school teams in Covington County, only one got ranked in the 2010 Alabama Sports Writers Association preseason football poll that was released Friday.

Straughn will start the season at the No. 7 spot in Class 4A.

The Tigers moved up from Class 3A, and joins Region 2 with Andalusia, Ashford, Alabama Christian, Bullock County, Headland, Hillcrest-Evergreen and St. James.

Straughn finished the 2009 season in the quarterfinals, where it lost to Cordova 13-7.

Other locals teams that received votes, but were not ranked are Andalusia and Opp.

The Bulldogs received 19 votes, and the Bobcats received 17 votes in Class 3A.

AHSAA competition begins the weekend of Aug. 26-27; most AISA school also start that week, but some may elect to pick up an 11 th game and play Aug. 20.
