Members of the LBWCC Foundation Board hope this year’s fundraiser will be unforgettable.

The Foundation will present “Nat King Cole – As I Know Him,” highlighting the life and songs of the musician who was born in Montgomery and grew up in Chicago.

The performance is set for 7:30 p.m. Sat., Aug. 21, 2010, in the Dixon Center for the Performing Arts in Andalusia.

“This is a rare treat for our area,” said June Simpson, development and events committee chair. “It promises to be a great performance with timeless songs and the story of a remarkable entertainer.”

Originally scripted by Dr. Wade Hall with additions by Tim Wells, who stars in the performance, the play is directed by Opp native Margie Benson and brings the music and story of Nat King Cole to life as seen through the eyes of Amos Harris, avid fan and founder of the Nat King Cole Society.

Cole, accomplished a lot of “firsts” in his life, including being the first African American on a television show and to perform on a radio show. His many songs include such hits as “Mona Lisa,” “When I Fall in Love,” “Ramblin’ Rose” and “The Very Thought of You.”

Wells, now retired, is a 20-year veteran as musical ambassador with the U.S. Army Field Band. As a bonus, a patriotic musical salute will begin the evening’s activities.

General admission tickets are $25 each and are available from any LBWCC Foundation board member and in the foundation office, located in the college’s student center. VIP tickets are also available for $100 each and include reserved seating and a reception prior to the performance. All proceeds from the event will support the Foundation scholarship program.
