It was Elba’s execution of the passing game that cost the Opp Bobcats a 19-6 loss during the first game of the regular season.

The first quarter of the game ended tied at 0; however, play heated up in the second quarter as Elba’s No. 14 Gunnar McCollough connected with teammate No. 6 Michael Lindsey to score two touchdowns – the first, a 16-yard touchdown came with 10:47 left before the half; and the second, a 25-yard pass with 1:25 left to go in the second.

The third quarter ended without either team touching the scoreboard.

During the fourth quarter, Opp’s Richard Davis scored on a 13-yard run with 11:52 left in the game, giving Opp its only touchdown of the game. Elba once again scored on a touchdown run, as well as the extra point attempt, bringing the game’s final total to 19-6.

“The main thing in this game was that Elba was executing their passing game,” said Shane Newton, Opp Middle School coach and Bobcat statistician. “With 16 of 18 passing, no interceptions and 183 yards for McCollough, we played hard but made some mistakes. (Elba) just could connect the ball.”

Opp will play again at home on Friday when they take on Daleville. Kick off is at 7 p.m. in Channel-Lee Stadium.
