Emergency personnel had to cut a Red Level woman from her car Friday after she apparently ran into the ditch and partially overturned the vehicle.

Winnie Lanier, 90, was driving a Toyota Camry when she apparently veered off the shoulder of Grange Forge Road shortly before 10 a.m.

“From the looks of things, she rode about 200 feet in the ditch before trying to get back on the road,” said Trooper Chase Amis of the Alabama State Troopers. “That’s a pretty deep ditch, and when she started to come out of it, her car partially overturned.”

The vehicle came to rest on its side, and emergency personnel worked about 20 minutes using the “Jaws of Life” to free Lanier from the vehicle.

Amis said Lanier was saved from any further injury when a local resident used a chain to secure her car and keep it from flipping over.

“She’s very lucky,” Amis said.

Lanier was transported to Andalusia Regional Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

Representatives from the Red Level Volunteer Fire Department, the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, the Andalusia Rescue Squad and the River Falls Police Department responded to the accident.-
