The Florala Wildcats are taking it “one small victory” at a time as they face Kinston this Friday night, head coach Chris Buckler said Wednesday.

“We scored 28 points against Geneva County, and 20 against McKenzie, so we’re starting to get points on the board,” Buckler said. “We’re starting to pick it up.”

The Wildcats are coming off a 60-20 loss to McKenzie last week, and Buckler said a lot of younger players got good playing time.

“We started three eighth graders,” he said. “We had some success in small areas, and most of that was against McKenzie.”

Even though the Wildcats (1-7, 1-5 in Class 1A, Region 2) are out of the playoff picture this season, Buckler said the players are still excited about playing football.

“Last week was the most focused I’ve seen our team all year,” he said. “We came out, and we knew we were fighting an uphill battle. We were excited, and they played until the last whistle.”

As far as the game plan this week, Buckler said they will run the ball, and will try to score more than 28 points, which has been a team goal in every game.

“That’s one thing we’ve tried to do the last couple of weeks,” Buckler said about the run attack. “We’re going to control the clock and use the clock as much as we can — make good decisions. We’ve got to the point now where we’re making the right adjustments.”

Kickoff in Kinston is at 7 p.m.
