Halloween on the Square this Saturday

It’s no “trick” that there will be more than 500,000 “treats” distributed at Saturday’s “Halloween on the Square” event in Andalusia, said Duke Smith of the city’s department of leisure services.

Last year, more than 5,000 people attended the event, Smith said. He’s hoping this year is no different.

“This will be our 11th year doing this event,” he said. “It keeps getting bigger and better each year. I know we’ve had some complaints about the way things are set up, but it is the best way we’ve got to keep everyone safe. Traffic to every entrance onto the Square will be blocked off beginning at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, and we’ll start handing out candy at 5:30 p.m.”

The event is set to end at 8:30 p.m., and as usual, there will be live entertainment and area merchants will be set up along the Square to distribute candy.

“This year, we’ve got ‘Crystal Clear’ from Birmingham coming to play,” Smith said. “They do it all, too – R&B, country, you name it. I even have two or three spots left for merchants who want a space on the Square.”

Cost is $165 per space, and Chamber of Commerce members who participate will receive a rebate back from the Chamber, he said. The city will provide candy for the event, which will be delivered on Friday, he said.

“Looks like the weather is going to cooperate with us,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll be gone home before it turns cool.”
