Burglar hits Catholic church

The Andalusia Police Department is investigating a Thursday night burglary of Andalusia’s Christ The King Catholic Church, as well as an attempted burglary at a local Gitty-Up-N-Go from earlier this week.

The two incidents are the most recent events in another rash of “smash and grabs,” in which criminals gain entry to a business, residence or auto, grab what valuables they can and make their getaway.

Lt. Barney Tyree said someone made entry into the church, which is located on the Sanford Road, between 11 and “first thing this morning.”

“It’s just sad,” Tyree said. “Someone broke in, took the items and left. There are no real suspects at the moment.”

The same can be said for an attempt at the Stanley Avenue Gitty-Up-N-Go.

“Sometime Monday night and early Tuesday morning, someone broke the window right behind the ATM machine. They didn’t touch it. They jumped out the car, broke the window and jumped back into the car for whatever reason.”

Tyree said a vehicle stolen from a local apartment complex was used during the incident.

No other leads have been developed on either incident, he said.
