Homecoming events on tap for Friday, Saturday

Former Andalusia residents can come home this weekend to an abundance of events centered around the Absolutely Andalusia Homecoming 2010.

Here’s what’s on tap today, Fri., Nov. 12:

• 9 a.m.- Grandparents Day at AES

• 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. – Dedication of Ben Crum Foshee Fire House at South Alabama Regional Airport

• 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. – “Visions of Thread and Fabric” Quilt Show at Johnson Park Gym

• 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. – “Then and Now – A Gallery of Art” at LAAC

• 1 p.m. – Veterans’ Day program at AMS. Because parking is limited at AMS, a shuttle service is also being provided with pick-ups at 12:35 p.m. at the following locations:

• city hall;

• Johnson Park;

• First Baptist Church, Andalusia;

• First Baptist Church, Whatley Street;

• Cedar Grove Church of Christ;

• Coleman Center;

• Southside Baptist Church; and

• Harmony Baptist Church (Please call 222-8117 to schedule a pick-up at this location.)

• 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. “Andalusia Architecture Worthy of Remembrance” at the First United Methodist Church.

• 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. – Visit the welcome center at First Baptist Church

• 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. — At least 14 local authors will be on hand for a “The Stories We Tell,” a book signing at the Andalusia Public Library that is part of Absolutely Andalusia: Homecoming 2010.

Participating authors include Donna Taylor, Roy Windham, Claude Keenam, Nina Keenam, Joe Wingard, Josephine Mosdell, Sally Hall, John Northro, Mary Ann Motes Webber, Jim Bundy, John Givhan, Judy Cooper, Charles Lowman, and Les Roberts.

Mosdell, who will have two books available, said her remembrances of World War II will be given to any veterans of that war who attend.

The event is planned from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

• 3:30 p.m. DIP Expo at AHS

• 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. – Street dance

• All day events – Walking tours of historic venues and sidewalk tour

On Saturday:

• 9 a.m .until 5 p.m. “Air Show” South Alabama Regional Airport

• The Covington Area Transit System (CATS) will provide shuttle transportation to and from the air show at South Alabama Regional Airport Saturday.

The pickup points will be:

• CATS main office building on Hillcrest Drive;

• Sitel parking lots; and

• Airport Road Entrance No. 2 and Entrance No. 3.

Fares are $1 per round trip. Children 1 and under may ride free. No appointments needed.
