The Opp Cultural Arts Council is now responsible for paying for its new home on North Main Street.

“The city purchased the property and financed it for the (OCAC),” Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar said at Monday’s council meeting. “They needed a building from which to operate, and they will make payments.”

The OCAC is responsible for an estimated $400 a month, plus utilities, insurance, taxes and building maintenance. The city purchased the buildings for $62,500, and has financed the buildings through Southern Independent Bank.

OCAC President Toby Hollinghead said she is excited about the opportunities the additional space will allow, but said “it will be a challenge” make the mortgage payment.

“We’re going to need the community to participate in the activities,” she said. “And we’re going to have various fundraisers.”

Presently, the OCAC is currently holding a Christmas bazaar to raise funds.

“The OCAC is for everyone,” she said. “We do this to provide cultural arts, both visual and performing to the community.”

Hollinghead said having the facilities motivates members even more.

“We’re looking for it to grow,” she said. “And we’re encouraging everyone to donate.”
