The writing is on the wall

T here were more than 240 participants in the first- ever Covington Schools visual art exhibit, which were submitted by students from each of the nine schools.

There were two categories – two-dimensional work which included paintings and drawings of any medium or mixed medium, and photography or computer-generated work. Entries were judged on original design, technical skill, expression and composition.

Best in show awards went to Abigail Thomas, at fifth grader at Straughn Elementary School, in category I, and Paige Irwin, a 12th grader at Florala High School, in category II.

Other winners included in the:

• Kindergarten through third grade category were: first place, Kassidy Powell, second grader at SES; second place, Dillion Spitzer, kindergarten at RLES; third place, Taylor Castleberry, a third grader at SES; and honorable mention, Audrey Fowler, a first grader at RLES.

• Fourth through sixth grade category winners were: first place, Abigail Thomas, a fifth grader at SES; second place, Nathan Greathouse, a fifth grader at PHS; third place, Heaven Hobby, a fifth grader at PHS; and honorable mention, Morgan Talley, a fifth grader at PHS.

• Seventh through eighth grade category, winners were: first place, Arron Grace, a seventh grader at SMS; second place, Karen Perry, a seventh grader at SMS; third place, Hanna Seymour, an eighth grader at PHS; and honorable mention, Katelynn Smith, an eighth grader at PHS.

• Ninth through 10th grade category, winners were: first place, Sabrina Nelson, a ninth grader at PHS; second place, Hannah Wilcox, a 10th grader at PHS; third place, Katie Nail, a ninth grader at PHS; and honorable mention, Bryan Stewart, a 10th grader at PHS.

• Eleventh and 12th grade category winners were: first place, Paige Irwin, a 12th grader at FHS; second place, Savannah Cassady, a 12th grader at FHS;

third place, Justina Clissold, a 12th grader at FHS; and honorable mention, Chelsey Walker, an 11th grader at PHS.

As if that weren’t enough talent in the county, students at Andalusia High School were featured in the school’s annual art exhibit.

There were more than 70 original works in different mediums, as well as 40-plus pieces of pottery.

Parents and students visited the school Wednesday to view the show.
