Get ready to freeze out cancer

Participants are needed for the 2011 Cancer Freeze event, said organizer Caleb Davidson.

The fundraiser, which is organized annually to help raise money for a local family battling cancer, will be held Sat., Feb. 5, at Florala’s Lake Jackson. Participants can water ski, wakeboard, kneeboard or tube in the frigid waters of Lake Jackson – all for a $20 minimum donation, Davidson said.

“Just like the name says, we don’t mind freezing if it will help raise money for those who need it,” he said. “This year, we will be sponsoring Joy Burgans of Luverne.

“Joy is a beautiful mother of three who is battling breast cancer,” he said. “Every dollar we raise goes directly to her.”

For a minimum donation of $20, participants have the option of any water event, as well as a chance to try a hand at a new event, Davidson said.

“We’re calling it ‘Skifetch,’” he said. “This is a new sport that has basically been described as ‘relay Frisbee on jetskis.’ You definitely have to see it to appreciate it, so it will be a great show.”

Davidson said for those who want a sneak peek at the new event can view videos at www.skifetch.com.

And for those who would rather watch than get wet, there will be a chili contest this year, so “come prepared to eat and judge,” he said.

Sponsorships are also available for $50 to have one’s company name, business or personal message placed on the back of this year’s shirt.
