New Year’s festivities sent at least 12 people to jail Saturday – including a man who assaulted two Andalusia Police Depa-rtment officers.

Lt. Paul Dean with the APD said officers resp-onded to a call on Riley Street in reference to a domestic disturbance and found 39-year-old William Edward Hill Jr.

“When the officer arrived, he found a person there who was basically intoxicated and causing problems,” Dean said.

Dean said after multiple attempts at communication, Hill became belligerent and aggressive, and when officers attempted to take him into custody, Hill became physical.

“He began actively resisting arrest, and when back-up officers arrived to help gain control of the situation, Hill punched – with a closed fist – an officer in the face.”

Dean said the struggle continued as officers attempted to get Hill into a patrol vehicle for transport to the county jail.

“That’s when he kicked another officer in the leg and groin-area,” he said.

Hill is charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, public intoxication, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was held in the county jail under a $26,500 bond.

Other arrests included three people for driving while under the influence , as well as nine others at a New Year’s party in Opp.

Agents with the Alabama Beverage Control Board were called to the O’Dale Lane home and discovered a party in full swing. As a result, one juvenile and eight other teens were charged with minor in consumption.
