Folks from across South Alabama came to the Heart of Dixie Gourd Patch’s first ever gourd show and competition Sunday.

Patch President Anita Ellis said she was “pleased with the turnout.”

Some 54 entries were received for the competition, which included a painted only category, mixed media, anything goes, spring theme and a youth category.

The show featured work from members of the patch, local youth and others, including 21 area youngsters.

“We had 14 entries from Straughn School,” Ellis said. “Anne Grantham had her class participate.”

Additionally, gourd grower Glenn Burkhalter was on hand with gourds for purchase for anyone who needed them.
