Locals wishing to make monetary donations to the relief effort in Japan can do so through the Red Cross Web site, local officials said Friday.
“Most everything is going through the Red Cross,” said Don Johnson of the Covington County Red Cross. “People can donate through redcross.org or text to 90999, which generally donates $10.”
Johnson said the Red Cross Web site has a list of official Red Cross Donation sites for supporting the relief efforts. Some of those include amazon.com; several banks, Nissan North America, several airlines, Wal-Mart and others.
Johnson said the Japanese people are not taking material items right now.
“They can’t do anything with it,” he said. “It’s too much to ship and the people coordinating the relief know better of what they need. People have big hearts, but unfortunately items could sit there for sometime.”
