The City of Opp voted earlier this week to sponsor four veterans for this year’s Covington Region Honor Flight.

CRHF President Tonitta Sauls told the council that they were taking World War II veterans first, and then Korea veterans.

“We have lost an Honor Flight veteran from our first flight, so we are taking World War II veterans first,” she said. “We are taking Korea veterans, but we’re being choosy.”

Veterans interested in flying should take advantage of this year’s flight, because there’s a possibility this is the last flight for some time.

“This could possibly be our last flight for a couple of years because of interest,” she said.

Sauls said the Honor Flight will once again fly out of South Alabama Regional Airport.

“It’s a little more expensive to charter an airplane to the airport,” she said. “It takes stress off the veterans. The first year was a 26-hour day, and this decreases the day by seven hours for us.”

There are 140 seats available on the flight, and applications are being accepted for both veterans and guardians.

The cost for veterans is free, but guardians who wish to accompany veterans must pay $550.

Sauls said that since the Wiregrass and Prattville Honor Flights have ceased flights, the local hub is taking applications from those areas as well.

The community is invited to the send off Oct. 1 and the coming home event.

“We want to make this a big deal for our veterans,” she said.
