Covington County residents and businesses forked over an estimated $108,000 and counting to support this year’s Relay for Life event, organizers said Monday.

Through events such as “flying kites for cancer,” “arrest a friend,” dodgeball tournaments and fishing tournaments, teams from throughout the county pitched in to make this year’s Relay for Life a success, Relay co-chair Carrie Turner said.

Relay for Life is the primary volunteer-driven cancer fundraising event of the American Cancer Society.

“We’ll probably end up with close to $110,000,” Turner said. “We have about three teams who haven’t turned in their money yet, so we’ll have a little more coming in.”

The anticipated $110,000 will go to ACS to help fight cancer.

Though the total is $10,000 shy of the $120,000 goal, Turner said she is pleased with the total.

“I think with the economy the way it is, Covington County has come out and supported the cause,” she said. “I’m so proud of what we did raise. I’m tickled.”
