Straughn's Katy Messick tries for a tag at third base during play at the regional tournament Friday

GULF SHORES — Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Straughn’s Lady Tigers scored seven runs with two out, and pulled away from Jackson in a 9-3 first game win in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 4A South Regional Tournament at the Gulf Shores Complex.

During its second game of the day, the Lady Tigers beat UMS-Wright to advance in the winner’s bracket.

The Lady Tigers’ first-game win at the regional tournament came at the head of three double plays, that were executed in similar fashion to one another. Each was a pop up, and a throw out from the respective position.

Straughn will play the winner of the Headland-Alabama Christian game today at 9:30 a.m.

Straughn led off the third inning on a single by Katy Messick. Tori Bracewell doubled Messick home, and later scored on an error, which plagued the Lady Aggies.

Tiffany Taylor reached and scored on an error to end the unearned runs for Straughn.

Kelli Wilcox scored on a single by Kaitlynn Wiggins, and Payton Mitchell and Katie Beck scored the last two runs on an error.

Straughn sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth on RBIs from Messick and Bracewell.

Jackson scored on run in the fourth for its third run of the game.

Paige Caraway pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits for the win. She struck out five.

Statistics from Straughn’s second game against UMS-Wright were not available when The Star-News went to press Friday night.
