LBW great resource for area

We are reminded this week what a tremendous resource this community has in LBW Community College, which recently held its 2011 graduation. All told, the school had 342 students eligible to walk across the stage to receive a certificate or diploma.

Multiply that number across LBW’s service area and think of the families whose lives will be better because a family member furthered his or her education. For example, earlier this month, 18 area residents completed the requirements for an associate’s degree in nursing (R.N.), and 15 completed the requirements to become a practical nurse. Either degree offers a chance at a steady, in-demand job. Having the nursing program in our county not only helps local students prepare for a career, but also helps alleviate the nursing shortage currently being felt in other parts of the country.

Traditionally, when the economy is down, college enrollment goes up, and that has been the case at LBW. The availability of additional federal Pell grants also haved helped enrollment numbers climb.

We are fortunate to have these educational opportunities so readily available in our community.
