Two-term Opp mayor H.D. Edgar announced Tuesday he will seek reele-ction in 2012.

Ed-gar, the owner of H.D. Edgar Tru-cking, was first elected mayor in September 2004.

Throughout his tenure as mayor, he has put together a team to focus on economic development and to improve the quality of life in Opp, he said.

Many residents had speculated on whether the mayor would run for reelection.

“We’ve got some projects under way that won’t be completed by 2012, and I’d like to see those projects completed before I give it up,” he said. “I’d like to get some more jobs in here. We’ve been able to make some good contacts over the last seven years. I think we can do a lot of things in the city.”

Long-range plans include converting the old city pool to a splash park, he said.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have the money right now,” he said. “But I’d like to see that happen in the next term.”

Additionally, Edgar said he’d like to build another baseball field. During his tenure, the city has constructed several fields.

“The possibility of annexation also exists,” he said. “There’s a little space between Horn Hill and Babbie. If you don’t annex them in, there’s some land that would help Opp in the future.”

Edgar said he’s proud of the things the city has accomplished in the last seven years, including the city’s involvement in the South Alabama Regional Airport, and hopes to add to that list during another term.

“In the last seven years, the economy hasn’t been the greatest, but despite that, we’ve been able to get some new jobs,” he said. “We’ve got some possibilities in the future. I said coming in, my goal was to raise the quality of life, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
