Do you have an interest in painting? Would you like to express yourself, while enjoying the company of others?
Local residents might be interested in joining Marion Powell and friends for a Friday afternoon painting session.
Powell, who along with her husband runs the Lucile Pierce Literacy Center on Ida Avenue in Opp, said she became interested in painting several years ago, and took some classes under Kathy Burgess in Kinston.
“We volunteered a room here for her several years ago,” she said. “And I decided to give it a try.
Burgess no longer teaches, but Powell said she was an inspiration as a teacher.
“She gave me enough to create my own masterpieces.” Powell said. “On Fridays, another lady and I paint away. We choose our own painting. We usually paint originals from photographs.”
Powell said she typically enjoys painting with oils.
Powell said she has been fortunate enough to sell some of her pieces to passersby.
“A lady from Canada saw one of my paintings, and she told me she had to take it back to her,” she said. “It made me feel good.”
Powell said that anyone who is interested in becoming a part of the group is welcome to attend Fridays at 1:30 at the literacy center, but is responsible for their own supplies.
“Others are welcome to come and join us,” she said. “The only thing is they must bring their own supplies, and we don’t teach. It’s just a good way to have fun.”
