Some five Alabamians have died since May as a result of the extreme weather conditions, Alabama Department of Public Health Officials said Thursday.

Two people in Lee County have died, and one in both Saint Clair and Madison Counties.

The latest victim of the sweltering heat is a Lawrence County man who died in a northwest Alabama hospital on Wednesday, officials said.

A Town Creek, Ala., farmer was reported to have become overcome by heat while working on a farm on Monday.

Dr. Jim McVay of the state health agency said there normally is a two-week delay in processing death certificates, so the actual number of heat-related deaths in the state could be even higher.
