West Haven director: Boxes coming

Mail service could resume at the West Haven Apartment Complex in the coming weeks, thanks to a set of new cluster boxes.

Mail delivery has been suspended at the apartment complex since a June 25 incident in which postal officials say there was “a threat of injury or attack by dogs roaming loose” to the local letter carrier, Debra Fetterly, communication program specialist for Alabama and South Florida Districts, said.

West Haven Apartment Complex director Lena Boswell said the new cluster boxes for her apartment complex should arrive within the next two to three weeks.

Boswell said she spoke with Andalusia Postmaster Mike Kolmetz on July 5 and informed him that the boxes had been ordered.

“I was upset with him for not delivering mail to the office since no one had been attacked by dogs at that site, but he refused (to continue mail service),” she said. “The dogs in reference do not belong to the residents of the housing authority. The housing complex is in the middle of other privately owned homes and dogs roam the area all the time.”

Boswell said she received a letter from Kolmetz stating she had 60 days to comply.

Until then, residents may continue to pick up their mail at the Andalusia Post Office from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday and Friday.

On Thursdays and Saturdays, they can pick up mail from 9 a.m. until noon.
