The clerk of a local hotel is recovering after her boyfriend allegedly robbed the hotel where she was working, assaulted her and then stole her car to flee the scene.

Sgt. Jason Curry of the Andalusia Police Department said officers have arrested Curtis Lee Dortech, 35, on charges of third-degree robbery, first-degree theft of property and third-degree theft of property.

“It all began Saturday about 4:30 p.m., when the clerk and Dortech were outside the building smoking a cigarette together,” Curry said. “The clerk said he pushed past her, walked inside the hotel, locked her out and then grabbed $250 out of the register.

“When the clerk realized what was happening, she tried to stop him from leaving, but he assaulted her and wrestled her car keys away from her,” he said. “As he stole her car and fled the scene, she called 9-1-1.”

Curry said the clerk suffered only minor injuries.

Dortech was located early Sunday, at about 3:15 a.m., in Brantley, and officers were able to recover the clerk’s car, but not the cash, he said.

Dortech has now been returned to Andalusia where he is being held in the Covington County Jail on a $33,000 bond; however, Curry said Dortech is now also wanted on violation of probation charges from at least one other Alabama county.

“If he can make that $33,000 bond, they’ll come and pick him up,” Curry said. “Mr. Dortech has an extensive criminal history.”
