Habitat needs help tomorrow

Warm bodies with a willingness to help and skilled roofers are among the requirements needed for tomorrow’s Habitat for Humanity build in Florala.

John Croft, the volunteer director for the county chapter, said Wednesday that volunteers were busy pouring the home’s foundation earlier in the day, making the site ready for the Friday’s building blitz.

He said there’s no way to definitively tell the number of volunteers needed, but it appears as if there will be enough materials, supplies and equipment on hand for the build.

“There is always something for everyone to do,” Croft said. “We’re going to have the LBW Community College baseball team out there putting up walls, trusses and roof decking first thing. We’ll follow that with windows and doors, and hopefully have the felt up by that evening – everything done to have to have the house dried in.”

Croft said skilled people are needed such as roofers and electricians.

“We do need someone to help put the shingles up, and it wouldn’t hurt to have an extra carpenter or two on the job, as well,” he said. “But if you aren’t skilled, don’t think that you aren’t needed. We can find you something to do.”

For those in Andalusia needing a ride to the Florala site, buses will leave both First United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church at 7:30 a.m. Friday, and will return later in the afternoon. There will be no shuttles throughout the day.

Lunch will be provided Friday by David’s Catfish House and served at Florala’s First Baptist Church.

On Saturday, the build will begin again at 8 a.m., with lunch provided by Blue Lake Methodist Camp.

“That day, we’ll probably need more electricians to help with the installation of the wiring and such,” Croft said.

Another building blitz will be held on Nov. 4 and 5 to help dry out what will become the new home of Sherrie Stewart and her sons.

Stewart, owner of a graphics and sign shop, has been living inside the business. She said previously, the new home represents a new dream come true for the family.

Those wishing to volunteer are asked to show up on site.
