Since the soon-to-be-2 Cooper Sasser can’t have a birthday party, area residents are asked to send the party to him – in the form of a birthday card and $1.

Sasser, the son of Christy and Justin Sasser who was diagnosed with leukemia this summer, is about to celebrate a birthday, and family friend Elaine Bulger is organizing a new fundraiser to help his family with treatment costs.

“Coo-per’s immune system is so low that he can’t be exposed to anyone, which means they can’t have visitors at home,” Bulger said. Her daughter, Amanda, and Cooper’s mother are lifelong friends, she said. “So, I thought I would make a birthday memory for him.

“If people are thinking of him, and praying and blessing him with cards for his second birthday, what a way it would be to not only uplift the family to know so many do think of them and care for them, but also for Cooper who can’t have a birthday party, that he too would have a birthday memory that his mom and dad can share with him later when he fully understands what is going on with him.

“Although he maybe a very sick little boy, he will know that he had so many people blessing him as he turns 2,” she said.

Bulger said she’s already sent word out to family and friends, but she’d like to see the movement go countywide.

“I took five birthday blessings to him and snuck a picture of him as he was dancing on the floor to one that played music,” she said. “It did my heart good to see that reaction with him, and I know that I’m doing the right thing for him and his family.”

Sasser’s birthday is Nov. 18, and those wishing to contribute are asked to send a birthday card with a handwritten note and $1 to: Cooper Sasser, P.O. Box 1043, Andalusia, AL 36420.
