Prospective students and their parents are invited to attend an open house at the Alabama School of Math and Science on Sat., Nov. 12. Those interested can register online at www.asms.net.
The open house begins at 9 a.m. and ends after lunch (prospective students eat free; others pay $6). Visitors will tour the school, see student-run demonstrations, and interact with faculty and staff. Located in Mobile, ASMS is Alabama’s only fully residential and public school for highly motivated sophomores, juniors, and seniors seeking advanced studies in math, science, and the humanities. Tuition, room, and board are free. Throughout its history, ASMS has enrolled a student from each Alabama county.
As a public school, admission is open to all Alabama high school freshmen and sophomores. The Admission Selection Committee evaluates three areas: academic achievement, maturity, and achievement in extracurricular activities. In addition, each candidate is interviewed on campus. All students live in dormitories under the supervision of a professional staff. ASMS offers a comprehensive residential-life program. With all students living on campus, numerous opportunities exist for tutorials, guest lectures, and field trips.
ASMS is ranked by Newsweek magazine as a top public high school in Alabama and listed as a top high school in the nation. In recent years, seven students have earned Bill Gates Millennium Scholarships, which pay for all of their undergraduate and post-graduate studies at the schools of their choice.
ASMS is located at 1255 Dauphin St. in Mobile
