Psalms 98 says, “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise,” and those are words that the Alabama Singing Women have taken to heart.

On Sunday, the 60-plus member group will perform twice in Covington County – first at 10:30 a.m. at Andalusia’s First Baptist Church and then at 6 p.m. at Opp’s First Baptist Church.

Included in the group are three locals – Janet Brantley, Betty Gay and Jennifer Dansby.

“The ASW is a state Baptist women’s choir of ladies from across our state who are active in their church’s music and worship ministries,” Brantley said. “It began about 10 years ago, and our purpose is to be a witness for Jesus Christ through singing.”

She said the group has sung at many different churches in the state and has performed at the Governor’s Mansion during Christmas several times.

“Each year, we perform at the Alabama Baptist State Convention, and we always try to schedule a short tour throughout the area during this time of year,” she said. “

This year’s convention performance will be held on Tues., Nov. 15, at Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, she said.

“Participants receive blessings of the spirit, and by exalting the Lord and sharing His love in song adds its joy and strength to each member’s life,” she said.

Brantley said she and the other women are excited to perform in their hometown.

“This is truly a wonderful performance, and we invite everyone to come and worship with us,” she said.

To become a member, one must be an active member of the music ministry of your church and provide a registration form signed by the church’s minister of music and letter of recommendation from your minister of music.
