The Andalusia Police Department is searching for the owners of two firearms after city workers found the guns tossed into the edge of the woods on College Street.

Lt. Paul Dean said it is believed the 20-gauge shotgun and the .22 caliber rifle were taken from a nearby home and discarded.

“But, we don’t know where they came from,” Dean said of the firearms. “They were found when employees from the city’s department of leisure services were working in the area.

“We’ve run the guns through NCIC and the local database to see if they’ve been reported stolen, but we’ve had no luck,” he said.

Dean said the department is awaiting the original owner information from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), which will show who originally, purchased the weapons new.

Dean said the guns hadn’t been “out long” in the elements.

“They were wet from Monday’s rain, but there was no surface rust,” he said. “We’re asking that everyone check their valuables, and if you find you’re missing these guns or anything else, call us.

“These (guns) could belong to someone who might’ve been gone on vacation or who works offshore, and they might not know they’ve been burglarized,” he said.

He said the owner must provide a serial number or at minimum, an accurate description of the weapons and proof of ownership.
