Through a partnership between Walmart and the Andalusia Christian Service Center, a non-perishable food drive will be held at Walmart beginning Monday.
The Rev. Leroy Cole said Friday collection bins will be stationed at the food entrance Mon., Dec. 19, through Fri., Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“The plan is to have volunteers there between those hours and what is raised during the day will be collected in the afternoon and taken to the center for distribution,” Cole said.
Cole said when Walmart staff approached him about the project, he was thrilled.
“The need is always there,” he said of stocking the area food bank, which distributes to Covington County residents on Mondays and Wednesdays. “We had a very heavy day on Wednesday, and we can’t keep up with that kind of demand without donations coming in – which is why we’re thankful for drives like this.”
Cole said nearly 7,000 pounds was distributed during the week.
“So, think about it next week when you’re out shopping,” he said. “Pick up a can or two extra and drop it into the bin. It’s needed and will be appreciated.”
The center purchases an estimated 13,000 pounds of food for a month’s distribution. The rest is gathered through donations.
